The Meaning of Baptism
Initiation into the Body of Christ
Holy Baptism is “full initiation by water and the Holy Spirit into Christ’s Body the Church” (Prayer Book, p. 298). God’s grace welcomes us into the Body of Christ, and God’s grace empowers us to live as members of that Body.
Whether as an infant, a brand new Christian believer, or a lifelong church-goer, the promises we make (or which are made on behalf of infants) when baptized remind us what it looks like to live a Gospel-shaped life of faith and service in the shared ministry of the Church.
What to Expect
Preparing for Baptism
Baptism is a joyful milestone, and we’re honored to walk with you through it, whether it’s for a child or an adult.
- Holy Baptism is offered to active members of the parish and their families, and requires at least one instructional session with the Rector (or other member of the clergy).
- Parents, godparents, sponsors, and adult candidates participate in a brief period of preparation.
- Apart from exceptional circumstances, the rite is offered on the following Feast Days only, as indicated by the rubrics of the Prayer Book:
- Easter Day
- The Day of Pentecost (fiftieth day after Easter)
- All Saints’ Sunday (the first Sunday after November 1)
- The Baptism of Our Lord (the first Sunday after January 6)
- We encourage families to contact us well in advance of their desired date.
